The Brief

How can Design methods help/be used in the context of Bioinformatics and related projects?

Participants can submit an Image – e.g. a rendering, a photo of an artwork or experiment – or a video of max. 1 min length – e.g. an animation, a short film, a discussion, etc.

The submission will be accompanied with a title and an abstract of max. 250 words which should briefly explain the submission.

The winning entries will be announced and posted on the DESIGN X BIOINFORMATICS 2022 website.

As additional resource, you are of course more than welcome to explore our Special Issue. An overview of the published papers is provided by our Editorial.

As an inspiration based on current events, this brief is accompanied by “The Queen/The Rebel” Brief which can be used as an additional inspiration of how to approach the previously-mentioned brief. Please state during your submission if you see your approach in the context of “The Queen”, “The Rebel”, or independent from these two categories.

The Queen/The Rebel Brief

The Queen

Queen Elizabeth II. (21.4.1926 – 8.9.2022) reigned for seven decades. She grew up in the challenging post 1st world war era, survived the 2nd world war, much later the COVID pandemic. She had to manage a large and diverse family and had to cope with the ups and downs of royal press coverage. More importantly, she had to lead the transformation process of the British Empire into the Commonwealth of Nation.

She was known for her persistence, silent humour, great patience, and outstanding motivation. Although she had to follow traditions and rituals and as Queen had to be widely politically neutral, she managed during her reign to allow for transformation and to slightly stretch her boundaries – a bowed head at Princess Diana’s funeral, or her controversial marriage with her personal dream candidate Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In the end, she went as one of the most respected world leaders who managed to lead the evolution of the institution British Monarchy into the 21st century.

The Rebel

JLG – the rebel. He revolutionized cinema co-leading La Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave) together with filmmakers like Agnès Varda, François Truffaut, and Claude Chabrol. He became famous with movies like À bout de souffle (Breathless) and Le Mépris (Contempt).

Jean-Luc Godard (3.12.1930 – 13.09.2022) despised storyboards, decomposed movies, and tried to break the rules of cinema wherever possible by confronting his audience with anti-immersive elements like microphones and cameras lurking at the screen to break the cinematic illusion. He was complicated in personal and economic relationships and refrained from collecting several prizes (e.g., the Honorary Academy Award). He is however widely recognized as one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century.

By answering the question “How can Design methods help/be used in the context of Bioinformatics and related projects?”, which of these two influential historical figures will you follow or take inspiration from?
